Reading Update

As I sat here at my desk I just had this overwhelming feeling that all three people that read this blog were dying to know what I was currently reading. Well, wonder no more! It is time for one of these super exciting posts where I tell you what I am currently reading and what I have recently finished up. Lucky you!

First off, I have to give a shout out to my lovely wife, Christy, for hooking me up with an early birthday present: a shiny new Amazon Kindle. Short review: I love it. Well done, babe.

Recently Completed

Radical, by David Platt 5 out of 5. This is an excellent book that I highly recommend. Nearly everyone that reads this will feel convicted of their lazy version of Christianity, while at the same time be spurred on to make the necessary changes in their attitudes and works.

How to Study the Bible, by John MacArthur 3 out of 5. This book would get a 5 out of 5 if the title had been “Why You Should Study the Bible”. John does an excellent job of arguing for the authority of the Bible and all the issues that surround that. Unfortunately, there were only about 4 pages devoted to how to actually study the Bible in depth, which is sort of what i was looking for. that will teach me to go by titles. I still highly recommend the book for the information it does contain.

All of Grace, by Charles Spurgeon 5 out 5. This was a re-read and it is always, always excellent. Highly recommend, especially if you have never read Spurgeon before.

The Blade Itself (The First Law: Book 1), by Joe Abercrombie 4 out of 5. This is the first book in a fantasy trilogy that was recommended to me by several people. There is more crude language than I usually like in a fantasy setting, but overall it was a fun read and I’m looking forward to seeing the story progress in the next book.

The Call of Cthulhu, by HP Lovecraft 4 out of 5. This is an old Sci-Fi story that I always meant to read but never got around to. I made a point to only read it at night so as to scare myself. Mission accomplished. It isn’t really “scary” as much as creepy. Recommended.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, by JK Rowling 5 out of 5. This was my, oh……4th re-read. I wanted to get the book story back in my head so I could get extra angry when the movie comes out in November and and annoy those around me by muttering in a loud voice, “That isn’t how it is in the book!” If you have never read the Harry Potter series you are really missing out. The first three books are kid friendly and warm, but starting with the fourth book it starts getting pretty dark – which is awesome. The darkness of parts of the series make the triumphs that much better. Deathly Hallows is a fitting conclusion to the series. To answer your question: Yes, I did cry. Frequently, in fact.

Currently Reading

Don’t Waste Your Life, by John Piper So far, so good. You can’t really go wrong with John Piper.

Think, by John Piper Two Piper books at once. Deal with it, sucka.

Ecclesiastical History of the English People, by Bede If you don’t know what the Church has already faced from the outside and within how exactly do you plan to recognize when things start repeating themselves?

Love and Respect, by Emerson Eggerichs. Apparently, wives want to feel loved and husbands want to feel respected. Simple, but true, Now, application…

Reformed Doctrine of Predestination, by Loraine Boettner I’ve started this book several times, but this time I will see it through. It is….predestined for me to.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, by Seth Grahame-Smith Did you know that Abraham Lincoln was secretly one of the greatest vampire hunters of all time? This book is exactly what it sounds like: pure awesome. This book is written based on his personal journals that detail his exploits.

Well, that is all for now. Perhaps next month I will have finished these books and can give you some mini-reviews. I know, you can’t wait, right? Let me know in the comments if you have read any of these books. Oh, and we all know you just bought the Lincoln Vampire book before you even finished reading this post. It’s ok. No one here will judge you.

Lady freaks out when McDonalds doesn't have any chicken McNuggets

From the description:

A Toledo woman, Melodi Dushane, loves McNuggets. According to a Toledo police report, she loves them so much that when she found out a local McDonald's was not serving them at 6:30 AM (that's breakfast menu time, sister), she became outraged and punched the drive-thru attendant.

To be fair, McNuggets are delicious and when you crave them you can't be denied. Bonus: I would love to be in the car behind here and just roll up like that, lol.

Inception: The Mashup

My wife and I went and saw Inception the other night and it was pretty awesome. Look for a review from me some time this week.

Even if you haven't seen Inception yet you are almost certainly familiar with the basic plot at this point. If you have never seen the trailer (is that even possible?) for the movie and want to avoid it at all costs - you may not want to watch these. Given the movie's popularity, it isn't unusual to see memes and mashups showing up around he ole interweb. Here are 2 Pixar/Inception mashups that I thought were particularly good.

Crackdown 2 mini-Review

There are a lot of reviews out there that you can read that will give you all the gameplay specifics, but here is a short guide to help you decide if you should buy Crackdown 2:

Did you like Crackdown 1? If yes, you should love Crackdown 2. If no, will hate Crackdown 2.

Do you like an almost pure sandbox game, with little linear story ? If yes, you'll love Crackdown 2. If no, you will absolutely hate Crackdown 2.

Are you a fan of running around like a crazy person blowing stuff up in new and exciting ways, alone or with friends? If yes, you'll love Crackdown 2. If not, you will hate Crackdown 2.

Basically, Crackdown 2 is Crackdown on steroids. There is no epic Mass Effect story and character development (outside of leveling). It is pure carnage, explosions, guns, racing, and orb hunting. I will say that the demo didn't really do the game justice since you didn't get exposed to the bigger elements the game has to offer. If you like blowing stuff up and climbing around massive cities, definitely check out Crackdown 2.

Personal rating: 4 out of 5
Rating average folks, non-genre fans will probably give it: 6 or 7 out of 10

Beat Crusaders: Hit in the USA

So, I just learned over at Topless Robot that there will be a live action movie for a pretty good anime from a few years back, Beck. It is the story of a young man that discovers rock music and his love for playing guitar. What follows is a slice-of-life drama about being in a band and trying to make it big. Anyway, the theme song for the show immediately got stuck in my head and I now share it with you.

Bonus: Anime trailer if you have never seen the show (and cut this trailer some slack; like 100% of all anime, it is much, much better in Japanese):

New "Currently Reading" Widget

I've realized I need to do a better job about letting you know of changes I make to the layout of this blog. So, from now on, when I add a blog to the blogroll or a widget or some other feature to the sidebar I will point it out in a post.

Yesterday I added an Amazon widget that lists cover art for the books I am currently reading. You can click on the title or cover and be taken to the Amazon page for that book. This is normally where someone will say they get a commission for items you buy there, but I am not a signed up for that program (a little too many terms and conditions for me). I will try to keep this list up to date. The widget can be found in the sidebar, but I am going to post a copy directly into this post, also:

Push th' Little Daises

I recently started the now canceled ABC dramedy, Pushing Daises, and and have been really enjoying it. The show follows easy-going Ned, a pie maker with a unique talent. "Is it juggling?" you ask. No, juggling isn't that unique. What Ned can do, however, is bring dead things back to life with a mere touch. Upon discovering this ability as a young child Ned quickly learned that there were, indeed, rules that governed his actions:

Touch something once, it comes back to life.

Touch it again, it is dead forever.

Touch something and bring it to life but don't touch it again within 60 seconds and something else is randomly chosen to die nearby.

Ned is working with a local PI that accidentally caught Ned in the act of reviving/killing someone. The PI, Emerson Cod, uses Ned's ability to revive dead victims of crime and query them about the who and how they were killed then collects the reward when he 'solves' the crime. Easy money.

Amazingly, (amazing, I say!) in the very first episode Ned learns that his childhood crush was murdered on a cruise ship. Amazingly, Emerson is on the case! Amazingly, Ned revives her and just...can't...touch her that second time in the 60 seconds. So............

Ned now has his childhood crush back in his daily life and cannot touch her in any way or she will die instantly.

Oh, the drama of it all!

But seriously, it really does not come off as odd as it sounds. Is the show quirky? Oh, heck yes. One of the first thoughts I had watching the show was that it felt like Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me got drunk and had an awesome baby together. I patted myself on the back when I discovered Lee Pace ("Ned") had been the older brother on Wonderfalls and the show had the same creator as Dead Like Me. Seriously, I am that awesome - or I watch too much TV. One of those.

Granted, I am only 5 episodes into the series but if the remaining 1 3/4 seasons is as awesome I will be well pleased. And, yes, you saw that right: there were only two seasons. Two season! You can knock that out in a a few weeks through Netflix, Hulu, or your favorite torrent site.
